What is my candle made of?
Here at Illuminate Space we use non-toxic and phthalate free ingredients in our candles. We start with 100% soy wax harvested in the USA, and then add high quality fragrance oils that are made with essential oils and various plant based materials specifically blended for safe candle use. We use cotton wicks that are lead and zinc free.
Why is my candle jar turning black?
While soy wax is virtually soot-free, you must follow proper care for the best results. Trimming your wicks each time before you burn again is key! Always trim wicks to about 1/4″. Use a wick trimmer, or use a tissue and break off the burned wick between your fingers. Always remove any black residue that may have fallen from the wick.
Also, never burn your candle more than 4 hours at a time. It becomes too hot (especially further down in the jar). If you want to burn it longer, simply extinguish it after 4 hours and allow the melted wax to harden again, and then re-light. Please follow the burning instructions located on the bottom of your soy candle container.
Why is my candle “tunneling”?
The optimal burn time for a candle is at least 2 and no more than 4 hours at a time. This allows for the soy wax to melt evenly to all sides of the jar with minimal residue. It also allows for the best fragrance distribution.
Why does one candle smell stronger than another?
Candles have what is called a “cold scent throw” (in the jar) and a “hot scent throw” (when burning). Here at Illuminate Space we use the same amount of fragrance oil per candle. However, different oils will have different scent throws depending on the scent profile. Typically, citrus and clean scents will have a lighter scent throw, while food based scents may smell heavier.
Why is my candle smoking?
Always keep your wicks trimmed to 1/4″! This will help eliminate smoking.
Do I really have to trim the wick?
With the exception of the first time you burn it, you should always trim the wick! Trimming the wick prior to burning your soy candle helps prevent soot, and also promotes a longer candle life. If you don’t have a wick trimmer, an easy way to trim your candle prior to burning is to simply pinch off the tip of the wick between your fingers with a tissue.
Why does my candle appear to have frost?
Natural soy wax often produces a frosted look similar to “mottling” or what some call “star-bursts” or “cauliflower”. The natural vegetable base is much like chocolate and reacts like chocolate when warmed and cooled. This is a natural characteristic and should not be considered a flaw. At Illuminate Space we do not add any chemicals or additives to prohibit this effect.
Why does my candle have what look like wet spots?
The soy wax isn’t making contact with the glass in some parts of the container and appears as a wet spot. We do not use additives or preservatives in the soy wax, so it remains in as near a natural state as possible when we pour the soy candles. When the candle experiences temperature variations, the soy wax may also expand or contract. This characteristic is normal and does not affect the quality, consistency, or performance of the soy candle when burned properly.
