We are in a summer of wandering. We don’t have a home of our own, and we are really just living in a state of chaos all the time. I try to balance the gratitude and misery…like I know this is a great problem to have, buying a new house, and I really am grateful. But some moments I get stuck in the land of misery and nomad-ness, and that’s what I want to share with you all today. You’re so welcome. ☺️
Our van has had broken air conditioning for a long time. Like an embarrassing long time, but I’m noticing that is where my anxiety manifests sometimes: the whole calling a mechanic, making the appointment, describing what’s wrong, dropping it off at the mechanic, finding transportation while car is at said mechanic, and then paying $$$$ for the repairs. So I just keep putting off all those things until “tomorrow”, and then nothing ever gets repaired. Are you with me? 🤪
So my poor boys and dogs ride around in my microwave oven with me as the Chicago-land heat index continues to go up to 550 degrees every day. One night, we were at my son Elliott’s baseball game and it starts POURING, and everyone runs to their cars in pure panic. As I wait in the long line of cars to exit the parking lot with my wipers frantically swiping the windshield like they’re going to fall off at any moment, all the windows in my car begin to fog up. At first I’m like, no big deal, this happens all the time because our air conditioning doesn’t work, I’ve got this!
So, I roll down the windows a little crack to let some outside air in. This does not help at all, in fact it makes it a whole lot worse. I cannot see a single thing out of my windows. I keep pressing buttons and adjusting dials trying to trick my defrost into working (I don’t know!?), and my panic and irrational level goes from 100 to 500 and I’m screaming at the boys, “GIVE ME YOUR SHIRTS!!” I roll down the windows all the way, cover the electric control panels on the doors with the boys t-shirts, and LEAN OUT OF MY WINDOW WITH THE RAIN PELTING ME SO I CAN SEE THE ROAD. I was zero amount of calm (surprise), and a whole lot of crying, cursing, Psycho. I’m running over curbs and sobbing and trying to make it to the next parking lot, so I can call my husband Michael to come rescue me BECAUSE LIFE SUCKS RIGHT NOW.
Michael found us, and drove my van home uneventfully. I learned from him that you don’t need A/C for your defrost to work in the summer, you just turn the heat on. The things you know…
I would like to inform you that our A/C is now fixed. All praises be. 🙌🏻
