I would always say I was no where near racist, but I’ve been awakened from my cloud of white privilege that I didn’t even realize I was in. I am learning it is not enough to be not racist, but instead anti-racist. I am still reading, listening, and trying to lean in to find (the even small) ways I can bring change to the world.
A journal from June:
My heart has been so heavy. Last night I just laid on the floor trying to voice my unrest to my teen son and my husband. I feel this hopelessness; I don’t know what to do.
So I do what I do best when I’m full of emotions, I create. I got these bottles out of the recycling bin and made them new again. Their beauty was there, it just needed to be illuminated. And I’m going to keep creating and illuminating- more beauty, more love, more kindness.
I don’t have the answers, I just know this is awful and I’m so sorry. I know I can lean in and listen and learn. And that’s what I’m going to do. To hear and see people of color and honor their story. To examine my whole self and unearth and unlearn any racism hidden in me and work to dismantle it in myself, my children, and my community.
