This is the story of my first tattoo: my husband and my 3 sons’ initials tattoo. The night we found out our third and last baby was a boy I cried and cried. Not because I’m not grateful for him, I loved him so much my heart could burst since day 1. But because I was grieving a dream. I always wanted a daughter, and I found out that just wasn’t in the cards for me.
Society likes to tell us that mothers and daughters stay friends, but sons leave. That mother in laws and daughter in laws are always enemies vying for the son’s attention.
So I decided I was going to change all of that. I was going to embrace having all sons with everything in me, and I was going to shatter all the stereotypes that go along with that. I’m going to embrace my sons’ significant others as my own, and just constantly widen the circle.
I got my first tattoo soon after: my husband and sons’ initials on my foot to symbolize this path I was walking. This journey was chosen for me and I will dance my heart out every step of the way.
Each year that goes by blows me me out of the water. Having sons just keeps getting better and better than I could have ever imagined. Every piece of my heart that grieved a daughter has been filled with hope and comfort in what is to come. Life is so magical like that; it always finds a way.
(Real life moment: I just took off my socks for the photo opp; and I’m still in my sweatshirt that I slept in the last (two?) days…I don’t know I lost count. I only put on jeans to drop off a wholesale delivery.)
