Our middle son is really into baseball. Like loves it. So I got into baseball. We got all the spirit wear, schlep our chairs to all the games, and cheer loudly for every single player. I don’t have a sports bone in my body (but I could toe touch and high kick in my day with the best of them!).
Sometimes I yell all the wrong things because I don’t know what I’m taking about. But I cheer loudly because I want them to know I am for them. Is this a foul tip or tap? Hit to third or triple? I don’t know, but GO KIDS GO!
The other day my oldest son found me on the couch in Elliott’s baseball jersey watching a REPLAY of the Cubs game from the night before. I told him to take a picture because “this is just who I am now, Trevor”. He declined.
We rally baseball because Elliott is into baseball, and we are into Elliott. We do this for football with Trevor, and why we go to every Batman premiere with Simon.
This is what is so magical about being a mom (or any kind of parent or really any adult who is crazy about a kid). You birth them and nurture them and protect them and help launch them. And then slowly, but surely you see them blossom into these amazing humans who do incredible things all on their own.
Every kid needs a hype woman (or man). They need to know we are for them, we love them, we believe in them, and they are amazing no matter what. Imagine what kind of world it would be if all our kids grew into adults that knew that from day one.
I’m on it. (If you know a kid that needs a hype woman, send them my way. I’m all about kids, whether they’re mine biologically or not.)
Our kids will change the world.
