Essential Oil Soy Candles: what do you use? I get asked this a lot!
Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils
First, I make two different products: Essential Oil Roller Bottles for aromatherapy use and Handpoured Soy Candles. In my roller bottles I use therapeutic grade essential oils. My favorite? Young Living. I highly value their seed to seal promise, that they oversee the integrity of the oil from start to finish.
Fragrance Oils infused with Essential Oils
Therefore, in the research I did when I started making candles, I discovered that a flame does more damage to essential oils than good. The high heat destroys the therapeutic properties and even creates a fuel-like scent. (This is why you’ll see cold water essential oil diffusers, for example.) Not only that, but it takes about 1oz of oil per 1lb of soy wax to make candles, so that means it would be about $200 a candle.
So, I sought out companies that make candle specific fragrance oils that are infused with essential oils so they are protected from the flame. They are phthalate free (the big toxin in a lot of candles that cause headaches and irritation!) and free of ingredients from CA’s Prop 65 list. My favorite? Candle Science hands down.
Non-Hazardous Requirements
Finally, there are five main “hazard groups” that they simply don’t allow.
✖ Carcinogens: These are materials known or thought to cause cancer.
✖ Mutagens: Materials that change the DNA of a cell, harming the cell and causing diseases like cancer.
✖ Reproductive toxins: Toxins that adversely affect reproductive organs and increase the risk of birth defects.
✖ Organ toxins: These are toxins that can cause adverse effects or disease within specific bodily organs.
✖ Acute toxins: Toxins that can cause adverse effects from a single exposure. Generally, this would be accidental exposure like spillage or ingestion.
